Industry welcomes third Zumwalt DDG

Contradicting what senior Navy shipbuilding officials told lawmakers last month, US Navy Secretary Donald Winter and Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England notified lawmakers mid-August that the service wants to complete construction of the third DDG-1000 hull in its current budget request, which the service testified is not equipped to counter current threats.
Defense contractors and lawmakers with much at stake in the next-generation Zumwalt-class destroyer were elated by the Navy’s latest decision to support construction of the third DDG-1000 hull in its current budget request, but some analysts and legislators on Capitol Hill decry the about-face as being heavily influenced by politics.
