Overlander tender to be relet?
22 Aug 2008
Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has reportedly confirmed that the Land 121 (Project Overlander) tender for armoured and conventional trucks will be relet.
According to the Australian Financial Review the tender awarded to BAE Systems had failed because the Defence Capability Group issued “almost impossible vehicle specifications” which BAE was unable to meet.
Negotiations with the preferred tenderers have been ongoing since October 2007 with negotiations with DaimlerChrysler for about 1000 G-Wagons and Haulmark Trailers for the supply of over 3000 trailers still on track.
The former Howard Government has been accused of rushing the project decision to win votes in the lead-up to the 2007 election.
The re-letting could delay delivery of the vehicles by up to two years, the report said.
ADM understands that the contract will have to be relet as the capability signed off for second pass approval is not what the ADF wants delivered.
Still to come
Other contracts under Overlander, including the acquisition of DaimlerChrysler's G-Wagons, are still on track.
