US ballistic protection specialist Rhino Linings has won a prestigious award from the US Alliance of the Polyurethanes Industry (API) for its work protecting US and coalition forces in the Middle East.

Rhino Linings received the award for its unique use of polyurethane in the Battle Jacket FCS, a spray polyurethane elastomer and proprietary additive which combines to expand and permanently seal undesired holes from ballistic penetration.

The company responded to an urgent requirement in 2004 for the Army to prevent and/or minimize fuel leakage from fuel tankers due to small arms fire from insurgents in Iraq. Fuel leakage from damaged tankers was hazardous to troops transporting the fuel and also posed risks to ongoing operations through lack of fuel. This system is now being implemented in Iraq and Kuwait on all fuel tankers in service.

The Battle Jacket FCS (Fuel Containment System) membrane system is based on a specially formulated fire retardant spray polyurethane elastomer developed by Rhino Linings USA for military applications. A proprietary additive is embedded into the formula that is activated when exposed to fuel. This additive acts in conjunction with the Rhino Linings formula to tightly seal off the undesired entrance and exit holes created by the projectile. The Battle Jacket (FCS) protective lining can be applied to protect any vessel containing or moving hydro-carbon based liquids. Specific thicknesses of the lining have been developed through testing with the US military for various tank geometries, tank substrates and ballistic threats.
