Defence launches future innovators award

Young Australians studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are encouraged to apply for the newly launched ADF Future Innovators Award.

The award is a cash prize that encourages Year 10 and Year 12 high school students in their STEM pursuits, and recognises their innovative talents.

Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said the ADF continues to build a high calibre STEM capability to shape and grow its modern workforce.

“This Government knows how integral STEM skills are to Australia’s expertise, productivity and prosperity. A passion for excellence in STEM starts at school, which is why investing in awards like this is so important,” Minister Reynolds said.

“With STEM skills being the foundation of more than 40 per cent of full-time ADF roles, we’re looking for young innovators to join our impressive STEM ranks and tackle the challenges of a fast evolving, technological world.”

The Government’s Force Structure Plan launched earlier this month reinforced the critical need identified in the 2016 Defence White Paper for a highly capable STEM-equipped ADF.

“This award will help keep students on track to graduate high school STEM capable, knowing the Navy, Army and Air Force will value their skills,” Minister Reynolds said.

“ADF servicemen and women passionate about their STEM careers will share their skills and experiences with these rising young talents, and demonstrate the exciting opportunities available across the services to work with frontier technologies and to make a difference to Australia’s security and future.”

Nominations are now open for awards with cash prizes of $250 for Year 10 recipients and $550 for Year 12 recipients.
