NIOA recently completed armourer training and Serial Inspections of the cannons protecting HMAS Canberra – the OrbitalATK M242 25mm Chain Gun. The training and inspections were the first conducted on M242 cannons in NIOA’s new state-of-the-art weapon support facility near Brisbane Airport, and were overseen by RAN personnel.

NIOA’s Technical and Armoury Services Manager Greg Toms said it was a great opportunity to have NIOA staff accredited by OrbitalATK to conduct the activity and to commission the company's support capability for medium calibre cannons in Brisbane.

"Successful completion of the required Series Inspections on these cannons demonstrates that we have the capability to support the entire range of OrbitalATK medium calibre cannons up to 40mm, including those being offered for LAND 400,” Toms said.

With the opening of NIOA’s new facility in July 2014, this type of training and maintenance activity is quickly ramping up.  The new facility features:

  • The largest secure weapons storage, maintenance and repair facility in Australia
  • Over 5,000 square metres of high security Defence accredited warehousing space
  • Optics repair centre and heavy grade weapons repair facility
  • 100m indoor test fire range for up to 40mm cannon
  • 200 seat training auditorium
  • Integrated logistics support capability with ready airside access

NIOA was appointed by OrbitalATK as their exclusive distributor in Australia and New Zealand for a broad range of products and services in January 2013. The range of OrbitalATK products represented by NIOA includes ammunition, medium calibre gun systems, gun and bomb fuses and specialist weapon systems.
