Airbus Defence and Space will work with South Korean company Huneed Technologies to provide advanced missile warning systems for the new “Surion” Korean Utility Helicopter.

The companies have signed an agreement which will see Huneed Technologies producing core electronics components of Airbus Defence and Space’s Missile Launch Detection System (MILDS).

Huneed has previously produced tactical communication equipment such as radios and encryption systems for South Korea’s defence forces.

MILDS is a passive imaging sensor, detecting the UV radiation signature of approaching missiles.

Four to six sensors provide optimum coverage and rapid reaction.

It is in service on aircraft including the Tiger attack helicopter, NH-90 and CH-53 helicopters and C-130 Hercules.

The Surion is a twin-engined utility helicopter developed jointly by Korea Aerospace Industries and Airbus Helicopters.

It has been in production since 2012, with more than 240 ordered to replace South Korea’s ageing UH-1 and MD500 military helicopters.
