The Defence and Industry Study Course (DISC) has been running in some way, shape, or form for almost 65 years now. Nominations for the 2018 are now open.

DISC is an excellent opportunity for both Defence and Industry to come together to learn about one another. As a rough guide, the courses sees participants attend four one week modules throughout the year between May and November all over the country. The course visits military bases, prime and SME company sites and has the chance to hear from high level speakers within the Defence community.

The group is also broken down into smaller groups or syndicates to examine a topic of relevance to the Defence community which is then presented to the group and interested stakeholders as a 20 minute presentation and 3,000 word report. ADM will be publishing a sample of the executive summaries of these reports in the New Year to give readers an idea of the calibre of the people involved.

ADM Comment: I cannot recommend this course highly enough ADM readers. I’ve been wanting to attend the course for years and finally made it happen this year. As a 2017 participant (and the first media member to take part), I saw and did things that I don’t usually have the chance to do with a fantastic group of people. While the capability and policy discussion were invaluable, the networking opportunities are amazing.

I was lucky enough this year to have a great group of people from all parts of the Defence community who were as eager to learn as I was. The group this year also supported fundraising efforts for Soldier On, Aviation High and Legacy with the cohort raising almost $40,000 to support these causes.

If your company is looking for a professional development opportunity or you need to learn more about how the Defence community operates, nominate. The significant time dedicated to the course is well worth it.

Note: CASG covered the cost of the course for Katherine Ziesing.
