Rhino Linings Australasia has teamed with US-based High Impact Technology (HIT) to make their jointly produced BattleJacket Fuel Cell Containment System available to the Australian market.

BattleJacket is a spray-on self-sealing/self-healing protective lining used successfully by the US military in Iraq to limit loss of life and damage caused by attacks on combat vehicles and fuel tankers.

"The engineered, elastomeric material used in BattleJacket expands and then permanently reseals after a fuel tank is penetrated by a bullet or other ballistic projectile," Rhino Linings Australasia managing director Mark Teakle said.

"The vehicle remains fully functional with no leaks, limiting the potential for an explosion and troop casualties.

"BattleJacket was developed by combining world-leading elastomeric linings formulated by Rhino Linings Corporation (USA) with HIT self-sealing patented technology."

Other commercial and industrial uses for BattleJacket include protection of railcars, pipelines, boat fuel tanks and above ground fuel storage facilities.

BattleJacket has proven capabilities to limit the impact of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mines, shrapnel and small arms fire.

It also provides protection against corrosion and abrasion and can be applied on metal and plastic surfaces, increasing the working life of combat and transport vehicles infrastructure and equipment.

Teakle said the product also dampened vibrations and acoustics in structures and contributed to increased structural strength.

"The properties bond tightly to the substrate to which it is applied, permanently eliminating corrosion and it has tenacious adhesion for long-term service," he said.

BattleJacket tactical uses are already in high demand by the US Military for superior protection of trucks and other vehicles.

Soldiers using easily applied patch kits may repair large puncture areas in the fuel storages of vehicles in the field.

For large applications, a self-contained mobile production and spray booth facility, called a Pop-Up Production Plant (PUPP), can be used.

Designed to be rapidly self-transported, erected and dismantled, the PUPP only needs access to military grade fuel.

It provides a platform for remote BattleJacket application and maintenance/armouring operations.
