The US Defense Department is on the hunt for as much as $US12 billion in annual savings from procurement accounts, a top official said.

The funds, to be garnered through the implementation of more efficient practices, could be plowed back into weapon system modernisation efforts, he added.

Ashton Carter, under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, said the procurement accounts - which until now were designated to be among the beneficiaries of DoD-wide efficiency efforts announced by Defense Secretary Robert Gates earlier this month - would also be subjected to new scrutiny in a bid to adjust to reduced spending growth anticipated in future Pentagon budgets.
