The US Navy has awarded a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Corp and Sikorsky Helicopter a contract worth $2 billion to service the Navy's H-60 helicopters through to January 31, 2020, the Pentagon announced on Friday.

The US Navy operates more than 400 of the MH-60R and MH-60S, with specialist versions for tasks such as combat search and rescue and mine detection.

Australia has ordered 24 MH-60R “Romeo” versions, with deliveries underway.

The US Navy fixed-price contract covers "performance-based logistics" on 1,710 assemblies and components, and covers the repair, modification, overhaul and replacement of hardware, including manufacture of new material, storage, obsolescence management and availability improvement.

Work will be performed at Stratford, Connecticut (50 percent) and Owego, New York (50 percent), and will be completed by January 31, 2020.

The contact was awarded to Marine Helicopter Support Co, a joint venture of Lockheed and Sikorsky.
