Navantia Australia has formalised a contract to provide platform system design and engineering assurance services for the Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers (DDG) with BAE Systems at Garden Island.

Under the contract, Navantia will provide ship, product and supply chain knowledge and will add an additional 14 design and engineering experts into the DDG enterprise. The company will work together with BAE Systems, the prime sustainment contractor, combat system integrator Raytheon, and ship repairer Thales.

“Navantia Australia is proud to be part of the DDG enterprise and looks forward to continuing to support the Royal Australian Navy both now and long into the future,” Navantia Australia managing director Donato Martinez said.

“As the designer and shipbuilding services manager of the Hobart Class under the AWD reform program, it was important for Navantia to be part of the DDG enterprise, tasked with sustaining this magnificent capability through its life,” Navantia Australia chairman Warren King said.

“Being the common designer between the Canberra class LHD, Hobart class DDG, and the future Supply class AORs, Navantia Australia can provide a cost effective and holistic service to the RAN across multiple classes of ships within the fleet,” Martinez added.
