Really great to see an Aussie AI company succeeding in the 5 eye/AUKUS group of nations. As a layman on the subject i was impressed when Q CNTRL was getting attention and contracts from it's INT products.
But if Australian universities and civilians (with the tiny initial/medium term investments in comparison to other medium/large regional and super powers) can develop these technologies than you can bet the likes of unfriendly nations (Russia, China, Brazil, Algeria, Turkiye) are/have been investing a LOT in these AI technologies and are either on par with our tech or likely not far off. After all pre DoW and DARPA funding i assume Q CNTRL was just being bankrolled by nervous/high risk hedge fund investors. I doubt there was much money in comparison to those listed unfriendly countries that have much less issues with the State investing in upcoming defence tech...

The well respected critics and SMEs from what I have seen have agreed with the move.
If you step back and look at the reason behind the acquisition of the VCS by Australia to begin with, it was obvious that they were intended to be an interim capability until the AUKUS class arrived.
I would think that the reason there was a new build boat in the mix under the original plan was that the US at the time looked at their fleet, build and maintenance plans and believed that they wouldn't have a 3rd block IV available. Since that point they have reassessed and determined that they can transfer an additional block IV.
As has been pointed out in the article and by sensible SMEs is that a class of 3 identical boats is a much better proposition than a mix of two separate batches, with distinct differences. I would agree that the move should save us money in acquisition, training and maintenance.
Training and spares etc. don't sound like much, but are significant both in cost and complexity.
These boats will hardly be out of date when we receive them as some I'll informed articles and political statements have stated. They will be refitted and refurbished as per regular maintenance programs stipulate.
The US are still operating Los Angeles class boats, and they are still highly capable on the world stage, so that goes to show where the newer and more capable VCS sit.
Its a shame the agenda driven critics and ill informed politicians in opposition can't stop trying to point score.
