ASC has launched the Sovereign Shipbuilding Talent Pool for shipbuilding workers impacted by the discontinuation of the Attack Class Submarine Program.

The Sovereign Shipbuilding Talent Pool was announced by PM Scott Morrison during last week's reveal of the AUKUS agreement.

ASC says it will explore options to re-deploy the displaced workforce throughout South Australia’s current and planned shipbuilding programs, while building the skills that will be crucial for the success of the nuclear-powered submarine program.

“ASC is committed to finding roles for skilled shipbuilding workers impacted by this announcement," ASC’s Chair Bruce Carter said. "We have implemented a process which will provide all affected employees with the opportunity to transition into positions within ASC or the wider industry.”

A transition team has been set up to assist affected employees to move through the transition process with a dedicated talent pool already open on the ASC website. ASC says its transition support team will assist affected employees through a three stage process, which will include:

  • The initial engagement of staff via both the online ‘Talent Pool’ portal or through dedicated job fairs.
  • The completion of a ‘Job Matching’ process which will assist ASC to match affected employees to new opportunities.
  • The completion of the on-boarding and commencement process.

The ASC transition team will also be responsible for facilitating support for new ASC employees.

Participants will have access to four different streams of employment and training:

  • Current and new ASC programs – including to upgrade and improvements to the existing Collins Class submarines.
  • Overseas placements with international partners to learn from their expertise and ensure ASC’s workforce is ‘job ready’ for the new submarine program.
  • Secondment into other Defence programs such as the Hunter Class Frigate, the AWD Combat Systems Upgrade, the Jindalee over the Horizon project, and the Offshore Patrol Vessels.
  • Access to training in digital skills, as part of a new future-focused, ‘Shipbuilding Learning and Development Program'.

“ASC are prioritising employees who are due to commence work with Naval Group Australia in the coming weeks and Naval Group Australia and ASC are working together to contact these employees as a priority," Carter said. "ASC are looking forward to holding meetings with affected industry employees and providing them a detailed overview of our transition process.”
