Western Australian Indigenous-owned firm Radian Architecture has received a strong endorsement from the Department of Defence after successfully completing a six-month strategic planning project for the Darwin Harbour Masterplan.
Radian was engaged to help shape the scope and direction of a proposed masterplan aimed at supporting Australia’s long-term national security objectives and the future needs of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Border Force and AUKUS capabilities.
Defence said Radian’s work had “positively influenced Defence decision making,” praising the company’s understanding of complex operational requirements, its engagement with key personnel and its ability to develop practical options for future planning.
Defence project lead Peter Taylor said Radian delivered what was required, on time and within budget.
“Radian engaged with multiple Defence stakeholders to understand the requirements and then developed three costed scenarios to support future decision making,” Taylor said.
“The team delivered its advice over six months, to an agreed program, and achieved both cost and time delivery as promised.
“Radian’s ability to think strategically about Defence’s maritime sustainment activities in Darwin, develop multiple scenarios and clearly communicate future possibilities has positively influenced Defence decision making.”
Radian spokesperson Andy Boyatzis said the feedback from Defence was a significant endorsement for the business and its team.

“Defence presented us with a complex challenge. We listened, worked through what was needed and delivered practical advice to help inform its future planning.

Boyatzis said the project also demonstrated the capability of Indigenous-owned businesses to deliver complex advisory work on nationally significant projects.

As part of its project review, Defence awarded Radian top marks across every performance category, including understanding project objectives, leadership, communication, quality of work, and innovation and overall satisfaction.
Defence also highlighted Radian’s responsiveness, collaborative approach and ability to bring a different perspective to the project, identifying the firm’s Indigenous ownership and effective communication as key strengths.
