Canberra-based Teron Labs announced that it has been accredited to become a FIPS 140 laboratory, the only laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere to offer this service.

Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140 is a standard that is used to assess the security and functionality of cryptography that is implemented in hardware and software products.

Any product that implements cryptography and is procured by the United States Government is required to be FIPS 140 validated. In addition, other governments and industries around the world are using the FIPS 140 standard as a benchmark to validate cryptographic implementations in the products they procure.

Having this sovereign capability allows local and international defence companies to have their cryptographic implementations validated in Australia.

“This is a massive win for Australian Defence companies wishing to export to the US market and also helps to grow the cybersecurity ecosystem in Australia,” said Anantha Kandiah, Teron Labs’ Engineering Director.

Founded in 2018, the company has grown from a team of 2 to a team of 14, and aims to help organisations gain certifications in a timely manner.

Teron Labs also carries out entropy analysis, penetration testing and advice and assistance with implementing quantum resistant cryptography solutions.
