Defence has awarded a contract for the construction of facilities to support the Army’s seven new CH-47 Chinook Helicopters at RAAF Base Townsville.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Darren Chester, welcomed the appointment of Lend Lease Pty Ltd as the Head Contractor to deliver the $54.8 million project.

“This project will contribute to the modernisation of the Australian Defence Force’s primary Medium Lift Helicopter capability,” Chester said.

“Over the next three years, this investment will provide economic benefits to the region, including potential involvement of the local construction industry and sub-contractors.

“Approximately 50 full-time jobs are anticipated to be created over the life of the project.”

The infrastructure and building works are focused on supporting the introduction and sustainment of the incoming CH-47F Chinooks, which are replacing six older CH-47D Chinooks.

Construction is expected to commence before the end of 2014 and be completed by mid 2017.
