News Review: Defence seeks new SF vehicle | ADM June 2011

Defence has released an RFT for a new MOTS Special Operations Vehicle – Commando under JP 2097 Ph.1B.

The RFT notice says Defence plans to buy between 40-80 SOV-Cdo. The vehicle must incorporate crew ballistic and mine blast protection, as well as an integrated logistic support (ILS) package which will cover operating, engineering, maintenance, supply and training support. Defence may award a Through-Life Support Contract to the successful tenderer or a third party at a later date; the TLS contract doesn’t form part of the current RFT.

Because Defence intends to acquire a MOTS vehicle to address the SOVCdo requirement, the tender process will preclude solutions that require modifications to major system components such as the engine, chassis and drive train. However, it is anticipated that some modifications will be required to comply with Australian Design Regulations and to address some user interface requirements.

The SOV-Cdo will require integration of a range of electronic systems, radios and a Battle Management System (BMS) in the form of a Networked Special Operations Capability - Mounted (NSOC-M). The successful tenderer must be able to work with the NSOC-M contractor, Elbit Systems, who will be responsible for systems integration, design and installation of the NSOC-M on the SOV-Cdo Prototype.

The RFT also seeks an option for a SOV Remote Weapon Station (RWS).Where a SOV RWS is offered it may be assessed by Defence as a costed option.

Industry Briefings were scheduled in Melbourne, Tampa (Florida) and London (UK) during May, with tenders closing on 14 July.
