First announced at the opening of the Land Forces convention in September, SA’s plans to develop a Land Integration and Innovation Centre have begun to take shape.

SA Minister for Defence Industries Martin Hamilton-Smith said the single, purpose-designed facility will be situated within a Defence and industry Land Systems Precinct.

“We know that a fresh way of thinking is needed if Army is to fully optimise its Land Combat System and overcome the emerging challenges,’’ he said.

"As part of our commitment to securing Land 400, we have approved Stage 1 of the precinct."

Minister Hamilton-Smith added that this centre will have the capacity to continuously and realistically simulate the challenging conditions of the modern battlefield and will help Army keep its Land Combat System at the cutting edge – integrated, optimised and ready for battle.

“The Government of SA has committed to the establishment of the Land Systems Precinct and development is well underway. Located on state-owned land at Edinburgh Parks, the Land Systems Precinct is strategically positioned to meet Army’s needs.’’

The site is adjacent to one of Australia’s major Defence bases, where a third of all of Army’s operational Abrams tanks and Land 400 vehicles will be based. It is also next to the Land Division of the Defence Science and Technology Group.

The location of the precinct is also in close proximity to companies specialising in a range of defence related industries, including heavy engineering, automotive solutions, software development, systems integration and advanced manufacturing.

The precinct is within easy reach of existing Defence test and evaluation ranges at Woomera and Port Wakefield and is close to the Cultana Training Area, now best suited to the year-round manoeuvre training requirements of Army’s mechanised multi-role combat brigades under Plan Beersheba.

“As part of our commitment to securing Land 400, we have approved Stage 1 of the precinct. This involves master planning and the establishment of the precinct’s infrastructure, the development of the manufacturing and sustainment facility for the successful Land 400 Phase 2 bidder, and the establishment of an industry proving ground,” Minister Hamilton-Smith said.

“Once established, subsequent stages will be developed to support the entire Land Combat System as a single ‘system of systems’ in the one location.”
