EM Solutions has released their latest product offering unprecedented bandwidth across the Ka-band frequency range in the SATCOM industry.

The Ka-Multiband Diamond series converts any modem signal to anywhere within the 28-31 GHz frequency spectrum and its linearizer can be programmed to compensate for the distortion introduced by many types of power amplifiers that follow in the transmitter chain.

Previously, almost all satcom Block Up Converters (BUCs) used direct up-conversion architecture with narrowband RF filters, and could convert only to a single and pre-selected frequency span within the broader Ka-band spectrum.

The company'sKa-band Gallium Nitride (GaN) nano-BUC power amplifier products are smaller, lighter and more power efficient in their respective output power classes and depending on the requirements, can cover the complete Ka-band frequency range in a single unit.

EM Solutions claims the Diamond series offers up to 50 per cent less DC power consumption, weight and volume.

The company has also been closely involved in overcoming one of defence's biggest communications issues - overcoming inefficiencies in communication with teams in distant, rough terrains and wild seas.

In July 2014, EM Solutions was awarded a contract to design and supply a number of wideband Comms-On-The-Move (COTM) terminals to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), to be trialled on a Royal Australian Naval vessel. The contract is project managed by the Defence Science Technology Organisation (DSTO).

An operating system ready for testing and certification is due this month and field demonstrations are scheduled with the Australian Navy in early 2016.
