ADM's 2013 Top 40 Defence Contractors and Top 20 Defence SME survey results released
The results of ADM’s 2013 Top 40 Defence Contractors and Top 20 Defence SME survey have been published in the latest edition of Australian Defence Magazine (ADM), Dec 2013/Jan 2014, which should have arrived on desks last week.
In aggregate terms, the value of Australia’s Top 40 Defence Contractors increased to $8.429 billion, up from $8.344 billion in the corresponding 2012 survey.
The Defence SME survey revealed the extent of the tough conditions for the smaller suppliers in the defence sector.
Some regular participants declined to participate in the 2013 survey.
The 2013 combined turnover for Top 20 SMEs was $569.92 million, compared with $595.7 million reported for the 2012 period.
Rising SME Micreo Limited, a designer and manufacturer of RF subsystems for global defence and aerospace applications, went against the subdued trend for SMEs with an improvement in their Defence SME ranking, up from 23rd in 2012 to 16th position in 2013.
Micreo MD Tim Shaw credits the focus on their core design and manufacturing activities as well as the construction of the company’s expanded facilities and emphasis on preparation for AS9100 certification for the stronger showing.
“The challenge was to remain focused on our core design and manufacturing activities and yet we still managed to achieve strong revenue growth, even in a climate of defence budget constraints. Our inclusion in the list of Top 20 SMEs at 16th position, up from 23rd the previous year, is very encouraging indeed,” he said.
The no.1 Defence Contractor in Australia for 2013 will surprise no one – BAE Systems Australia – with a turnover of $1.4 billion. ASC Pty Ltd, however, has risen up the charts to take the runner up spot with a turnover of $915.7 million.
Sikorsky Helitech again tops the SME list with $85 million with CAE Australia Pty Ltd in second place with $60 million.
Adagold Aviation heads the ANZ-owned SME list with $48.5 million, followed by Australian Defence Apparel with $32.5 million, a company where down-sizing has seen it appear in the SME list for the first time.
The full report can be read in the current issue of ADM – Dec/Jan 2014.
