Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (Kongsberg) has signed a contract with the government of Denmark for the delivery of National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) air defence. The contract has been priced at EUR €500 million (approx. A $887 million).

“With this procurement Denmark will significantly enhance the country’s operational capabilities and the ability to effectively combat modern air threats, and furthermore strengthen the overall NASAMS air defence presence in the Nordic region,” President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Eirik Lie, stated.

The NASAMS system consists of Raytheon’s radar and advanced missile variants, as well as Kongsberg's Fire Distribution Center (FDC) and multi-missile launchers.

“The Danish selection underscores NASAMS’ position as the world leading mobile medium range integrated air defence solution for NATO allies,” Executive Vice President of Division Defence Systems in Kongsberg, Kjetil Myhra, said.

NASAMS can employ a mix of missiles in addition to the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM). The AMRAAM-Extended Range and AIM-9X Sidewinder has provided both longer- and shorter-range capability.

NASAMS' modularity and open architecture has enabled the continuous introduction of new technology. According to Kongsberg, NASAMS has covered a wide range of air defence missions and growth potential for long range air defence and anti-tactical ballistic missiles as part of the NASAMS architecture.

With this procurement Denmark becomes the 14th NASAMS user nation, and the 8th nation in NATO.
