Arnco RePneu polymer type technology has been used to flatproof 16.00R20 tyre/wheel assemblies for a US military route clearance Buffalo vehicle platform.

The special Buffalo application led to further evaluation of Arnco technology in 16.00R20 assemblies tested on a Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT).

At the completion of six hours of testing, the tyres had met the criteria for stabilisation outlined in the test plan.

No erratic or unusual wear was noted on the tyres at the end of testing, and the temperature of the tyres was shown to be decreasing.

The tyre assemblies tested were filled with RePneu TVHR 38 durometer product.

While performance was acceptable at 40 miles per hour, long-term in-field use showed that at 55mph, the higher 38 durometer RePneu TVHR product at 80 fpsi resulted in 16.00R20 lug tread area crowning which caused lug strain.

These test reports point to product performance limitations when used at 55 mph in on-road applications, in 16.00R20 lug-type tyre tread designs.

Based on lessons learned from the HEMTT test experience, Arnco supplier Bearcat Tyres now recommends RePneu TV 28 durometer polymer at 60 fpsi levels for 16.00R20 lug-type tyre heavy truck applications.

The company is confident RePneu TV 16.00R20 filled tyres will meet vehicle operating requirements provided they are processed/pressurised at the optimum level to meet the truck GVW specification.

In doing so, the tyres on these types of vehicles will be completely flatproof, resistant even to bullet and shrapnel damage.

Maximum load carry weights, extended tyre life and 100 per cent response mobility can also be achieved.

Bearcat is meeting with members of Mercedes Benz Military Vehicles and MAN Military vehicles in the near future to discuss test results and to look at having the RePneu option available on new Defence Force trucks.
