The effort is called the Accelerated Precision Mortar Initiative.
The aim of the prograqm is to rapidly field a 120-millimeter mortar that could provide a "fire and forget" capability and greater accuracy so that soldiers require fewer rounds to defeat targets, an Army program official told Inside the Army.
Technology demonstrations are taking place at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, and are expected to wrap up by the end of the month, the official said.
According to company representatives, Raytheon, General Dynamics and ATK are participating in the demonstrations.
