Vice Admiral Matt Tripovich AM CSC RAN, Chief Capability Development Group, formally opened Thales Australia's Network Enabled Warfare Laboratory (NEWLab) at a ceremony at Garden Island in Sydney on April 21.

NEWLab is a unique industry resource providing a suite of experimentation and integration tools to enable Australian industry to partner with the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and other Commonwealth agencies, in order to give the country's soldiers, sailors and airmen the warfighting edge.

Using these tools, Thales will build on its technical capability in delivering complex networked and information-rich solutions.

NEWLab lowers risk by working through and demonstrating viable solutions prior to contractual commitment.

It is not about blue-sky experimentation, but real solutions using existing and new
technologies.

"In developing NEWLab, we have made a significant investment in a world class delivery platform that will support the ADF in achieving its Network Centric Warfare ambitions," Ian Irving, Thales Australia's Land & Joint Systems Vice President, said.

"NEWLab complements the Commonwealth's existing facilities, and will play an important systems integration role as technologies become more complex and the volume of work related to Network Centric Warfare increases in the years ahead."

NEWLab will also be central to many future technology transfers, and is currently hosting innovations developed by Thales internationally.

These include NGIN, an internet protocol-based on-board integrated communication system for naval platforms, and the DI@NE deployable tactical internet for large multinational headquarters as well as smaller vehicle-based command posts, which is also based on IP technology.
