News Review: C-RAM rolls out to FOBs | ADM July 2011

The Saab Giraffe Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) radar introduced late last year by the ADF has now been rolled out to a number of patrol bases and Forward Operating Bases (FOB) across Uruzgan Province.

The C-RAM system detects rocket and mortar attacks against bases, providing sufficient warning for personnel to take cover. The initial C-RAM installation at Tarin Kot was declared operation on 1 February, five months ahead of schedule.

Reports say it has proved its worth ten times since then and the system will roll-out to more FOBs over the remainder of this year.

The provision of the C-RAM capability follows on from the Force Protection Review effected by former Minister for Defence John Faulkner in 2009.
