Defence has been trialling a new space surveillance sensor to monitor objects and activity in space in South Australia. The trial is for the span of 12 months.
Director General Space Capability, Brigadier Hamish Ashman, said the trial marked an important step in strengthening Defence’s understanding of the space domain.
“The trial highlights the role of Australian industry in delivering advanced capability outcomes,” Brigadier Ashman stated.
“By leveraging domestic innovation and expertise, Defence is contributing to the development of sovereign space capabilities that underpin national security.”
The trial has been using the Australian-built SkyDome system, developed by Quasar Satellite Technologies, to improve how Defence tracks and understands the space environment.
The sensor uses passive radio frequency technology based on research by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
Enabling wide-area observation of satellites and other objects without transmitting signals, it will help Defence test how the technology can support future capability and integrate with current systems.
The trial, Defence said, will also seek to understand how the system can be used by operators in real missions while improving awareness across air, land and space domains. Insights will guide future investment decisions and support the growth of Australian space capability.
Insights from the trial will inform future capability options under Defence’s Integrated Investment Program (IIP).
Brigadier Ashman said maintaining accurate and timely awareness of orbital activity was increasingly important as space became more contested and congested.
