Site works are expected to be finished late July 2013 with manufacturing of the long thin Joint Strike Fighter components expected to begin early in 2014.
Site works for Australia’s
biggest titanium manufacturing facility started in Adelaide.
South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill turned the first sod
of dirt on site at a ground breaking event held at BAE Systems
Edinburgh Park
site.
A collaboration between the State Government and BAE Systems,
this project will ensure that South
Australia has the advanced manufacturing skills
required to supply long thin titanium components for the Joint Strike Fighter
program.
BAE Systems
Chief Executive David Allott said the investment would deliver long-term
benefits.
“It reinforces the South Australian Government’s long-term
commitment for our state to become an advanced manufacturing leader with an
important role in the F-35 supply chain over the next 20 years,” he said.
“This new
facility will allow us to address a significant capability gap in advanced
manufacturing in Australia,”
he said.
“Also, the
investment may lead to new opportunities in defence and other sectors
like commercial aviation.”
