BMT Design and Technology and DSTO will research possible technologies for Australia’s future submarine, after securing funding through the Australian Defence Science Institute’s Collaboration Research Grant Scheme.

BMS and DSTO will work closely with the Victoria University to develop a risk analysis and evaluation, focusing on the future submarine fire safety system. The study will include research in to fire prevention, detection and suppression, and occupant response, behaviour and emergency procedures.

“Australia’s next generation submarine is likely to feature a combination of new and existing technologies which in turn, creates unexplored risks,” said Aidan Depetro, Senior Engineer at BMT Design and Technology. “The severity of those risks, potential mitigation measures and the effectiveness of any proposed controls are all unknown and there has been very little work carried out in this area.”

BMT’s proposal was one of 30 submissions to the Collaboration Research Grant Scheme this year, seeking over $1.4 million funding.

BMT Design & Technology is an independent professional engineering firm providing services such as naval architecture, marine engineering, cost modelling and analysis to the Defence and maritime sectors.
