A system for capturing essential Defence knowledge took out the Business Development & Marketing category at the 2011 Norman Disney & Young (NDY) Innovation Awards.

Established in 2008 to recognise and reward innovative solutions within the ranks of NDY, the 2011 NDY Innovation Awards program once again generated significant enthusiasm throughout all NDY offices resulting in a total of 87entries with 13 of these shortlisted as finalists.

The Defence Corporate Knowledge system created by NDY Defence Manager Hamish McMurray, consists of hyperlinked spreadsheets and documents that capture the knowledge gains made in NDY’s Defence projects over the last 18 months.

The system has enabled the team to create Defence specific submissions and reports efficiently and quickly without having to search for lost or incorrectly stored information.

According to McMurray, the Defence Corporate Knowledge system is more than a set of interlinked documents for capturing knowledge.

“The system represents a way of thinking that makes sure that information is recorded properly and made readily available to the group, and is a tool to create standalone knowledge structures that are independent of individuals," he said.

“This capability has resulted in an increase in invitations to submit for Defence work, with $38M in current submissions created using the system."
