Defence Minister Stephen Smith and Defence Materiel Minister Jason Clare have declared potential conflicts of interest in relation to family members who hold contracts with the armed forces.

Mr Smith told Parliament this week that he’d become aware of a potential conflict of interest arising from his brother-in-law’s employment with a Defence contractor.

The communications contract runs until October 2014 and is worth $45 million a year.

The minister said arrangements had been put in place to ensure his office was not involved in any purchasing or contracting with his brother-in-law’s company Unisys.

Mr Clare made a similar declaration in relation to his brother who indirectly provides ‘disposable food service products’ to the ADF.
