The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has approved an Indian request to buy up to 53 Mk 54 Mod 0 torpedoes for the Indian Navy's fleet of MH-60R helicopters.

According to the DSCA's announcement, most of the weapons would be taken from US Navy stocks, with a total estimated cost of US$175 million.

Besides the 53 torpedoes, the approval covers exercise weapons, air launch accessories, spare parts and support services.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to strengthen the United States-India strategic relationship and improving the security of a major defense partner," the DSCA stated.

The Indian Navy has ordered 24 MH-60R helicopters to equip its fleet growing surface fleet. It already operates a number of Mk 54 torpedoes.
