Birdon and Civmec have welcomed the announcement that Defence will build a new precinct at the Henderson Shipyard in-and-around the Common User Facility (CUF).

"Australian-owned maritime engineering company Birdon has welcomed the Government’s investment into the multi-billion dollar defence precinct for naval shipbuilding and servicing in Henderson, near Perth," Birdon said in a statement.

"While the development of the Henderson precinct is a long-term project for the Government over two decades, Birdon says immediate investment and commitment from the business, education and training sectors is required to build workforce capability in the area."

"Birdon established a permanent presence at the CUF in 2017 and has recently expanded its footprint with the lease of additional facilities and the establishment of a technical hub beside the Australian Marine Complex."

"The sheer scale of the proposed infrastructure investment in Henderson and the magnitude of the opportunities it will present for us, a proven construction and defence contractor, is potentially a game changer for these divisions of our business. It represents a monumental day for Western Australia and should be welcome news to the entire State," said Civmec's Executive Chairman, Jim Fitzgerald.

"Transition planning will be key here for all parties to ensure there is minimal disruption to local industry, business and workforce to deliver these exciting initiatives."
