The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has approved a possible sale of up to 150 Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) Block I Missiles to Japan for a total cost of US $900 million (~$1.4 billion).

Also included are MK 21 Mod 3 Vertical Launch System canisters to house the missiles, component parts, support equipment and ongoing testing and integration support. The weapons will be employed by the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force's (JMSDF) fleet of Aegis-equipped destroyers.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Indo- Pacific region," the DSCA stated in a release.

RTX will be the prime contractor for the sale.

"The proposed sale will further enhance Japan’s capability to protect Japan and local allied land forces and will significantly improve Japan’s contribution to integrated air missile defense in the Indo-Pacific region."
