The NSW Government has opened Saber Astronautics’ new research and development laboratory in Chippendale. The NSW Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, Anoulack Chanthivong, recognising the company’s 18 year contribution to the state’s innovation and space sector.

“We’re at an inflection point in the industry where space is growing far faster than the systems used to manage it.  Militaries appropriately focus on national security and protecting space assets.  Civil space, however, now requires operations that can scale: coordinated traffic management, safe re-entry, and real-time automation of large numbers of satellites," Saber Astronautics, CEO, Jason Held, said.

This new Chippendale laboratory has marked the next phase of Saber’s growth, building civil space traffic management and space logistics systems as orbital activity accelerates and becomes increasingly complex. The facility will also explore advanced architectures designed to develop new capabilities not previously delivered at scale in the space domain.

“Our work with the United States Space Force, combined with our live operational heritage, has allowed us to build advanced capabilities delivered worldwide. Our new lab in Chippendale builds on that foundation, positioning NSW at the centre of efforts to solve the space traffic and space logistics challenges that will define the space industry’s future," Held stated.

Over nearly two decades, Saber has supported satellite operators, defence organisations and commercial space companies with operational planning, simulation and command-and-control software.

The company’s tools are designed to improve safety, coordination and efficiency in an increasingly congested space environment. The software is used in their own mission control centres at the Australian Space Agency (ASA) headquarters and in Colorado.

Saber Astronautics’ Chippendale R&D laboratory will serve as a hub for continued collaboration with industry, government and international partners as global demand for secure, reliable space operations systems grows.
