Southern Launch has announced the safe return of Varda Space Industries’ W-6 capsule to the Koonibba Test Range.
The W‑6 re‑entry is the fourth capsule to land at the Koonibba Test Range in just over 12 months, putting orbital re‑entries on a path to becoming as routine as space launch.
"Four capsules safely returned in just over 12 months is a proven, repeatable capability. Southern Launch has built the infrastructure and the expertise to make orbital re‑entry as routine as launch, and the W‑6 mission is further proof of that," CEO Southern Launch, Lloyd Damp, stated.
"The future of the space economy depends on the ability to go to orbit and come back again. Our partnership with Varda is a powerful example of what's possible when world‑class re‑entry infrastructure meets world‑class in‑space manufacturing—and Australia is right at the centre of it."
A thriving low Earth orbit (LEO) economy with in‑space manufacturing and pharmaceutical research relies on returning high‑value payloads safely to Earth.
"Every reentry builds on the last. W-6 is another demonstration that frequent, low-cost, reliable return is easily accessible. The data our partners are taking home from this mission would have taken years to collect through traditional testing methods," Varda, Vice President of Hypersonic Test and Targets, Dave McFarland, said.
Throughout the mission Southern Launch is responsible for the end‑to‑end re‑entry operation, including regulatory approvals, range safety, airspace management, tracking and recovery of the capsule.
Varda’s W‑6 capsule carried payloads from NASA and other United States government partners with a focus on next‑generation thermal protection systems. Data gathered during the high‑speed return will support the development of future reusable re‑entry vehicles and inform national security and space research programs.
The W-6 mission continues Varda’s mission to design, build, and return re-entry vehicles that expand commercial activity in LEO, in particular in-orbit pharmaceutical processing.
Working closely with the Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation, the Koonibba Test Range plays a critical role in establishing Australia as a destination for commercial spacecraft re-entries.
"The Koonibba community takes immense pride in every mission that returns to our lands. Our children are growing up watching spacecraft return from orbit right on their doorstep, and that is inspiring the next generation to dream bigger than ever before," Koonibba Community Aboriginal Coporation, CEO Corey McLennan, highlighted.
Southern Launch and the Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation share a proud nine‑year history of collaboration in developing the Koonibba Test Range, working together to create a unique sovereign capability that services the global space industry.
