The University of Melbourne and QinetiQ have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the hope of combining academic expertise with industry insights.

The MoU will cover a range of collaborative initiatives in research areas such as autonomous systems, robotics and data analytics. Both organisations will pursue research and industry engagement opportunities including those aligned with the AUKUS agreement.

The MoU will offer academics access to problems and data, bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical application. QinetiQ scientists and engineers will benefit from upskilling opportunities, including specialised training and potential University accreditations.

University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Mark Cassidy said the MoU represents a commitment to further developing Australia’s sovereign capabilities. 

“It's a commitment to harness the combined power of academic expertise and industry, and a recognition of the possibilities this collaboration can achieve,” Cassidy said. 

“Students are at the forefront of this partnership, with plans to create scholarships, internships and exchange programs, including potential exchanges with QinetiQ entities. 

“This will provide valuable industry exposure for the next generation of innovators in Australia’s defence and security sector.” 

Initiatives supporting diversity and inclusion are included in the agreement, with a focus on creating educational pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and students from non-traditional backgrounds.

QinetiQ Australia Managing Director - Engineering Services Simon Fredericks said the partnership reflects QinetiQ’s commitment to advancing Australia’s sovereign defence capability.

“We’re investing in the pillars that matter most - our workforce, our infrastructure, and our ability to innovate,” Fredericks stated. 

“By combining leading academic research with real-world defence challenges, we’re creating opportunities to build the skills, technologies, and collaborations essential to delivering on national priorities.”
