The Tasmanian Government will build upgrade Macquarie Wharf 6 in the Port of Hobart to accommodate the Australian Antarctic Program's sole icebreaker: RSV Nuyina.
The Commonwealth is providing $188 million to the Tasmanian Government over four years to build the new Macquarie Wharf 6 and deliver a refueling solution for Nuyina, which is unable to transit the Tasman Bridge to refuel at Selfs Point.
Construction on the new wharf will begin in 2025. While it is being built, Nuyina will use existing facilities at the Port of Hobart.
“This agreement secures a fit-for-purpose home port for the Nuyina and locks in Tasmania’s future as the home of the Australian Antarctic Program," said Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff.
“As part of the agreement we will also deliver appropriate refuelling infrastructure for the Nuyina and other vessels coming into Hobart."
