The capabilities of Orontide’s Engineering Services division in Sydney were put to the test earlier this year when it received a call for help from the Royal Australian Navy.

One of Australia’s most famous and historic tall ships, the Young Endeavour was in trouble. Cracks had been found in the two main masts, rendering the ship unseaworthy.

The Young Endeavour is a pride of the Australian navy's  fleet, with appearances around the world at an array of different events.

A challenge presented itself when it was discovered that the masts were made of an uncommon aluminium grade. Orontide compiled a new weld procedure with Lloyd's, the ships, classification society.

After securing the material from Germany the race began to formulate a weld procedure.

The process then involved a series of x-rays of welds and a range of mechanical testing of the welds before the repairs were carried out on board.

Orontide’s Sydney team were under the pump to get the ship back to sea with the pressure mounting.

Orontide took the task in their stride and completed all aspects of this unique job successfully.
