NSW-based SMETEC Services has achieved German Government qualification to cut armour steels utilising fibre laser for Rheinmetall Defence, as part of preparations to manufacture the Army’s new military vehicles in Australia. The qualification is in addition to the waterjet cutting qualification reported in August 2020.

Owned by Tim and Louise Smeets, SMETEC specialises in precision processing of exotic materials using fibre laser and waterjet cutting technologies, including the cutting and processing of Bisalloy Armour grades.

Adding laser to its already existing waterjet qualification, SMETEC is the first Australian company to achieve the approval from the German Army – known as Bundeswehr WTD91 qualified - for cutting of armour grade steels to the stringent specifications of the German Army’s TL2350-0000 Standards using both laser and waterjet technologies.

“SMETEC Services is extremely proud of our recent achievement adding to the company’s existing Waterjet Qualification,” Tim Smeets said. “The company has been working hard to increase its capabilities to meet domestic and international Defence needs.

“Our new facility, which is currently under construction, will bring new opportunities and long-term work for our regional area.”

“We continue to diversify to support Defences growing needs,” Louise Smeets said. “At SMETEC our focus is with meeting the capability requirements that are required to ensure our nations sovereign capabilities are met.”

“Bisalloy continues to collaborate with partners to develop innovative solutions in steels,” Bisalloy Steels CEO and Managing Director, Glenn Cooper, added. “As the only manufacturer of quenched and tempered steel in Australia it is important that Bisalloy partners with highly capable companies like SMETEC to provide our end users the solutions they need.”
