US Army researchers are asking industry for information on building affordable technology to protect against tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, rockets, artillery, and mortars in all weather.

To do the job, Army researchers are looking for missiles, tactical laser weapons, or hunter-killer UAVs.

The Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Redstone Arsenal, Ala., has issued a request for information for a market survey for an affordable counter-UAV interceptor missile, laser weapon, or hunter-killer UAV.

Army researchers are not issuing a formal solicitation, but to gauge industry interest and available technology for future systems designed to counter UAVs, cruise missiles, rockets, artillery shells, and mortars.

The US DOD is pursuing several tactical laser weapons programs aimed specifically at countering UAVs, artillery shells, rockets and missiles.

These high-energy laser programs are developing tactical lasers stronger than 100 kilowatts.

RDE Command says companies interested in responding to the RFI may submit several concepts.

No foreign participation is allowed.

Those interested should respond with white papers and technical briefing charts no later than August 5, 2011 – just three weeks away – RDEC Redstone Arsenal
