A multi-billion dollar provider of tactical communication systems for the defense industry partnered with HUBER+SUHNER to develop a custom surge protection device (SPD) compatible with their man-pack and vehicle-mounted radio equipment.
As one of the manufacturer’s long-standing cable and connector suppliers, HUBER+SUHNER was awarded the opportunity to take over the design of a new SPD connector that leveraged the latter’s 50 years of experience in coaxial RF-protection technology.
The customer initially approached two other suppliers of SPDs, but they were not able to provide the technical support and production capacity that the development project required. The lack of transparency and responsiveness to the customer’s requests further complicated matters and thus a more proactive and accommodating team was needed.

The team at HUBER+SUHNER was awarded the design project that initially called for a design based on its existing 3406 series of gas discharge tube (GDT) protectors, able to handle surge currents of up to 5kA.
Additionally, the customer required a robust, weatherproof interface that eliminates the bulk typically seen in SPDs – a critical factor for inline or panel installations.
HUBER+SUHNER not only delivered on these requirements, but the team also developed a new feedthrough solution that ensures easy installation and maintenance, with minimal dimensions as short as 30mm.
As a result, this multi-billion dollar defense contractor designated HUBER+SUHNER on its approved vendor list and entered into a multi-phase contract to purchase these coaxial SPDs.
