About the Workshop
How can AI-enabled and autonomous weapon systems be designed, developed, and fielded in ways that are lawful, ethical, safe, and responsible?
This one-day workshop brings together government legal advisors, defence industry, engineers, ethicists, and academics to examine the legal and ethical imperatives for responsible military innovation. It forms part of the Lawful by Design (LBD) initiative, led by Article 36 Legal, which promotes early integration of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and ethical safeguards into research and development—well before formal Article 36 reviews.
Why Attend?
- Gain insights into Australia’s Article 36 legal review process and its implications for industry.
- Explore IHL principles governing AI-enabled and autonomous weapons.
- Understand how ethics, safety engineering, and accountability intersect with legal compliance.
- Learn about emerging approaches to AI assurance, testing, and governance.
- Apply IHL principles in a practical activity using fictional autonomous weapon scenarios.
- Network with experts across law, defence, academia, and industry.
This practical, hybrid workshop seeks to bridge the gap between industry led technical innovation and defence legal review processes.
